Journalist Reveals That Liverpool Star Is Set To Be Sidelined For “Weeks” In Latest Blow For Klopp

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo is expected to be sidelined for “several weeks” with a knee injury, according to Eindhovens Daglad reporter Rik Elfrink.

The Dutchman had to be substituted after picking up the issue during the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Tottenham at the weekend and Elfrink says that he won’t play for the Netherlands during the next international break:

“Cody Gakpo is expected to be out for several weeks at Liverpool. If all goes well, a few weeks. The Dutch matches in October do not seem feasible for the former PSV player at the moment.”

It means that the 24-year-old will miss the Europa League group game versus Union Saint-Gilloise and the league fixture against Brighton at the very least.

There is also a decent chance that Gakpo won’t feature in the Merseyside derby in just under 3 weeks’ time.

How did Gakpo pick up his injury?

The forward suffered the injury following a bad tackle from Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie. The Italian caught the Liverpool star’s ankle and twisted his knee in the process.

While Gakpo carried on, and even scored the equaliser just a minute later, he did not come out for the second half, with Diogo Jota taking his place.

The Netherlands international was subsequently pictured wearing a brace following the final whistle, with fears that he had damaged knee ligaments.

Who will Liverpool start in place of Gakpo?

While Jota did come on in Gakpo’s place at the weekend, the Portuguese forward was sent off for two bookable offences against Spurs.

He will still be eligible for the next fixture versus Union Saint-Gilloise, but he won’t be available for the Brighton game next weekend. It means Darwin Nunez will need to step up to the plate again.

The Uruguayan was surprisingly overlooked to start for the Tottenham clash, but he will play a prominent role now that Gakpo is on the sidelines.
