Alan Shearer Issues Verdict On Liverpool After City Draw Opens Up Title Race

BBC pundit Alan Shearer has praised Liverpool for their “outstanding” performance against Manchester City at the weekend.

Despite giving a good account of themselves in the 1-1 draw, the two drop points meant that Arsenal went top of the table on goal difference. Shearer believes we are set for a “great” end to the season with three teams vying for first place:

As Shearer says, Liverpool did tremendously well to compete with City, considering they had so many players unavailable.

Five notable starters were missing due to injuries; Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were absent, while both Mo Salah and Andy Robertson started on the bench.

While some fans were disappointed by the scoreline, getting a point against an almost full-strength City team was some achievement.

Klopp will be hoping to have some players back after the international break

The Reds play their next Premier League fixture versus Brighton at the end of the month, with the Merseyside derby having been postponed due to the club’s participation in the FA Cup.

It should, however, mean that manager Jurgen Klopp will have a stronger starting lineup when they face the Seagulls at Anfield on March 31st.

What are the bookies saying about Liverpool’s title prospects?

The bookmakers still make Klopp’s men second favourites to finish top of the table, but the odds between the three teams have shortened significantly.

City are no longer odds-on for the title, with many pricing them at 6/5. The Reds are 9/4, while Arsenal are currently 5/2.

From the looks of things, it does appear that it will be a three-way battle until the final game in May. With Liverpool having the slightier easier run-in compared to their rivals, they will still fancy their chances.
