Liverpool and Chelsea are both interested in buying Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, according to FCInterLive.it.

The Italian website claims there is a chance that both clubs “could come forward in January to sign” the Turkish international.

Calhanoglu has had a superb start to the season, with his goal in the 3-0 win over Napoli at the weekend his seventh in all competitions so far this campaign.

FCInterLive report that there is genuine interest from two other Premier League clubs in addition to Liverpool and Chelsea, with Newcastle and West Ham also keeping tabs on the 29-year-old.

However, a transfer next month is said to be very unlikely. It is believed that even if a team were to offer €50m (£43m) for Calhanoglu, it would be rejected.

That stance would change at the end of the season, when the Nerazzurri would have a chance of replacing the midfielder, but a deal in January is not thought to be on the cards.

Why would Liverpool be interested in Calhanoglu?

The playmaker has been deployed as a holding midfield player in recent campaigns and that is an area of the pitch that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp would like to strengthen.

Even so, Calhanoglu is more of an anchor man, dictating play with his passes from a deep-lying position, rather than a player who breaks up play and makes tackles.

The Turkish star turns 30 in February and you can’t see Liverpool paying in excess of £40m for a player that is closing in on the final stages of his career.

Calhanoglu may well be in outstanding form but it would be a huge shock if it leads to him making the switch to Anfield.
