Liverpool and Manchester United have both “reactivated” their interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, according to Foot Mercato.

The two teams are said to have held talks with the entourage of the player, who is believed to be open to joining a Premier League club.

However, in what would be another huge blow for Jurgen Klopp’s side, Foot Mercato claim that Gravenberch “prefers” a move to Old Trafford, if there is a choice between the two.

The Reds have already lost out on deals for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea, and there is now the potential for another midfielder to snub a switch to Anfield.

At the moment, neither Liverpool nor Manchester United have made a formal bid for Gravenberch but the early signs are not promising.

There is a longstanding interest in Gravenberch

The Reds have been weighing up a move for the Netherlands international since the back end of last season. Reliable journalist James Pearce revealed in April that the club had contacted the player’s agent and father.

Interest in Gravenberch did cool as it became clear that Bayern were not interested in selling the player, so the Merseyside club subsequently switched targets to Lavia and then Caicedo.

Are Liverpool looking at alternatives?

The two top midfield options that the Reds are currently weighing up bids for are Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure and Fulham’s Joao Palhinha.

Either player would probably cost, at least, £60m, so Gravenberch is likely being looked at as a cheaper option. The fact that he isn’t Liverpool’s primary target may have been fed back to the player.

One of the main reasons why Lavia snubbed the Reds was down to the fact that he didn’t feel wanted enough, and that may be why Gravenberch is also favouring United at this moment in time.
