Liverpool have been added to the list of clubs pursuing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to the Corriere Dello Sport.

The Italian newspaper reports that the Reds are seriously “thinking about replacing [Darwin] Nunez” this summer and they have identified the Nigerian international as a possible option.

Osimhen is expected to leave Napoli at the end of the season, despite having only signed a new contract with the Serie A club at the back end of last year.

A release clause reportedly worth up to €130m (£111.6m) will become active in the coming weeks, with the Corriere Dello Sport claiming that Liverpool are a serious contender for the player’s signature.

It is believed that Paris Saint-Germain are willing to pay €90m (£77m) for the 25-year-old but Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis wants teams to trigger the player’s buyout clause.

With Osimhen having scored just 16 times in all competitions this season, there is a reluctance among interested clubs to pay that much for the forward.

De Laurentiis may be hoping that other suitors enter the race. In addition to Liverpool, the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are thought to be keeping an eye on developments, although the Blues’ chances have been downplayed due to the fact that they are facing issues with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

While many believe that PSG are the favourites to sign Osimhen, the Corriere Dello Sport report that the forward’s “dream” is to play in the Premier League.

That may have piqued the interest of the Reds. Of course, any move is likely to depend on whether they can find a buyer for Nunez and sell him for a satisfactory price.
