Liverpool’s Champions League Group Stage Opponents Have Been Announced

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool will face Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg and Genk in the Champions League group stages this season, UEFA have announced.

In a repeat of last year, the Reds will face off against Carlo Ancelotti’s side once more, having almost been knocked out by the Partenopei in the group stages before going on to win the competition.

Only a last-ditch save from Alisson Becker from Arkadiusz Milik prevented an equaliser in the final group match. The 1-0 win allowed the Merseyside club to progress to the knockout rounds, where they subsequently went on to lift the trophy.

Salzburg actually faced Napoli in the Europa League last season when the Italian side knocked them out of the last 16. It is the first time that the Austrian side have managed to qualify for the group stages automatically.

This is actually down to Liverpool as there was a free place up for grabs due to the fact that the Reds had already qualified through their domestic league as well as winning the Champions League last season.

Racing Genk have not been in the Champions League for eight years, and considering that Liverpool could have faced the likes of Galatasaray, RB Leipzig and Red Star Belgrade from pot 4, they will be pleased with who they have been drawn against.
