Liverpool’s Four Major PFA Player Of The Year Contenders: Who Is Most Deserving Of The Accolade?

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has laid his cards down on the table on who he thinks should be named the PFA Player of the Year this season.

The left-back is backing his captain Jordan Henderson to get the award for his leadership qualities that have helped marshall the Merseyside club’s title challenge:

“For me, I think he’s the leading candidate [for player of the year]. At times this season when we’ve struggled Hendo has been the one that has driven us forward. He’s the one who has made sure we don’t get slack, or he has chipped in with some really important goals or really important assists.”

Henderson is not the only player who will be considered for the accolade, though. Press the “next page ” as we look at four Liverpool stars who could well be in contention for the prize.

Sadio Mane

The Senegalese international is the club’s second top goalscorer with 15 goals this campaign and has popped up with some absolutely vital goals for the Reds.

Mane’s injury-time header to score the winner against Aston Villa earlier this season was a particular highlight, while he also made telling contributions in the Merseyside derby and in the home game against Leicester.

Virgil van Dijk

After winning the award last season, the Dutchman’s form has continued this campaign with the Reds having the best defensive record in the division.

Van Dijk has also chipped in with a few goals himself, scoring both goals in the 2-1 win over Brighton earlier in the campaign, as well as the opener in the victory against Manchester United last month.

Mohamed Salah

With 18 goals in all competitions, the Egyptian is once again leading the way as Liverpool’s top scorer, and he has been in red hot form recently, having bagged himself five goals in his last six league appearances.

Salah shows no signs of slowing down as he looks to finish his third season at Anfield on a high with a third successive Premier League Golden Boot.

Jordan Henderson

The Liverpool captain has not always been a fan favourite, with many having advocated that he be benched for the likes of Fabinho and Naby Keita in the past.

But, as Robertson has so eloquently stated, Henderson is the glue that keeps this Reds machine going. He drives the team forward with his demands to maintain the highest standards.

When asked to move positions in the absence of Fabinho, he was more than able to fill in, and while his statistics won’t stand out compared to his teammates, he brings a mental strength and resilience to the squad which can’t easily be quantified. Is it enough to be given the player of the award? We shall have to wait and see.
