“My Understanding Is…” Romano Addresses Reports That Liverpool And PL Rivals Are Pursuing Ligue One Starlet

Liverpool are not planning to step up their interest in Rennes winger Jeremy Doku, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Reports in the Italian media over the weekend had suggested that the Reds, along with Chelsea, Arsenal, Napoli and Juventus were keeping tabs on the Belgian international but Romano says the player will be staying in Ligue One for now:

“I’ve seen some speculation linking Liverpool with Jeremy Doku, but I’m afraid my understanding is that there is nothing concrete going on there. For now, there is nothing advanced with any club yet. For sure there’s a lot of interest in Jeremy Doku, he’s considered an amazing talent but I think the World Cup can also help to push Doku on the international stage as happened last time with Belgium. He’s a player to watch, for sure, but there’s nothing going on with Liverpool or any other club just yet.”

Doku’s performances this season don’t suggest that Liverpool will be making a move for him any time soon. He currently has no goals or assists in seven appearances.

Romano does claim that a strong World Cup could revive interest in the 20-year-old, although it’s very possible that he won’t be at the tournament in Qatar. He has not played for Belgium’s senior side since July last year.

Liverpool’s focus for upcoming transfer windows is expected to be on strengthening their options in midfield, rather than on the frontline, so Doku is unlikely to be joining the Merseyside club in the near future.
