Pearce Provides Update On Liverpool’s Star’s Injury After Another Setback Before Chelsea Victory

Liverpool will be without centre-back Joel Matip for at least a few weeks due to a calf injury, according to The Athletic‘s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce. Speaking on the Red Agenda podcast, he said the 29-year-old won’t be back any time soon:

Matip’s injury record since joining the Reds four years ago has been pretty appalling. The defender had only recently recovered from a toe injury which he picked up in the Merseyside derby following the restart back in June.

In terms of other injuries, Joe Gomez is expected to be back in training this week after both he and Matip missed the 2-0 win against Chelsea. Luckily, the England international only suffered a knock to his knee and he should be in contention for Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie against Lincoln City.

Jordan Henderson had to be taken off at halftime on Sunday due to a tight thigh muscle but he isn’t expected to be out for too long, while Xherdan Shaqiri is back in training following his own muscular injury. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is still sidelined after picking up a knee problem in preseason.
