Shearer tips Liverpool to win the league next season

Premier League legend Alan Shearer has given his view on how next season’s table will pan out.

Manchester City pipped Liverpool to the title last season on the final day of the season, finishing above the Reds by only a single point. Having only lost one league game all season, it was an agonising near miss for Jurgen Klopp’s men, who fought hard to finish the closest Liverpool have been to a league title since their victory in the 1989/90 season under Kenny Dalglish.

Manchester City may be the bookie’s favourites for the title next season, but many are touting the Reds to overcome Guardiola’s side. Punters might be wise to take advantage of the latest William Hill sign up offer.

But as the new season inches ever closer, the Community Shield curtain raiser often gives us an indication on who will hit the ground running when the league kicks off.

This year’s Community Shield saw Liverpool draw 1-1 with Manchester City, after Joel Matip’s goal cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s opener. The Red’s had their chances to win the game, but the game ended with City victorious in a penalty shoot-out.

Speaking after the game, Alan Shearer admitted he believes not much will change at the top of the table in the 19/20 season compared to the last.

The former striker, who scored 260 Premier League goals during his glittering career, says that the Community Shield fixture proves that the two are still neck and neck, with no other side coming close to matching them.

Speaking to The Sun, Shearer said: “What Sunday’s game has shown us is that this season will be no different to the last.

“Two very, very good teams went head to head at Wembley — and there still isn’t a lot between them.

“Without doubt, it will be Liverpool and Manchester City once again fighting it out for the title.

“The standard of football last year was just incredible from both of them — the runs they went on after Christmas were unreal.”

However, despite Manchester City’s win at Wembley, Shearer believes that Liverpool will end the season next year above the Blues – claiming their first league title for 30 years.

“I just can’t see anyone challenging these two when it comes to lifting the trophy in May.

“I’m going to stick my neck out here and say Liverpool might just pip City to the league, providing they are more organised in defence than they looked at times on Sunday.”

Shearer’s prediction echoes that of Jamie Redknapp’s, who believes the Red’s will build on their European success from last season.
