The Five Other Goalkeepers Who Have Scored Goals In The Premier League Era

Anfield Stadium

Alisson Becker’s sensational winning goal against West Brom was a rarity in the Premier League era, with the Brazilian becoming only the sixth goalkeeper in three decades to score.

Undoubtedly, the goal that Liverpool’s number one scored was by far the best in terms of technique, producing a perfectly placed header into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

It was also extremely important for a couple of reasons, being a last-minute winner and the fact it kept the Reds in contention for a top-four finish.

So what were the circumstances surrounding the goals of the other five keepers? Press the next page to find out more.

Peter Schmeichel – Everton v Aston Villa – 2001

It took nine years following the formation of the Premier League for a goalkeeper to score in the top flight, and it was somewhat fitting that the Danish keeper got it considering he was the standout shot-stopper of the era.

Schmeichel’s goal was merely a consolation, though, as he went up for a corner against Everton with the game at 3-1. He volleyed in from close range at the back post, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a point as the match finished 3-2.

Brad Friedel – Charlton v Blackburn Rovers – 2004

The former Liverpool player was playing for Blackburn at the time. He came up for a corner and despite the delivery being overhit, he stayed in the box and slotted home from close range when the ball came back into the penalty area.

Friedel’s goal did make it 2-2 but, unfortunately for the American international, Charlton still managed to find a winner in the dying moments of the match, with the game finishing 3-2.

Paul Robinson – Tottenham v Watford – 2007

There was nothing deliberate about this one. The Spurs keeper was taking a long freekick in his own half when the ball bounced wickedly over Ben Foster into the Hornets’ goal.

Robinson made it 2-0 on the day, and Tottenham eventually secured a 3-1 victory. It was the first time a goalkeeper had contributed to a win in the Premier League.

Tim Howard – Everton v Bolton – 2012

Remarkably, the second American on this list, Howard shot a long goal kick which caught the wind and a favourable bounce as it sailed over the hapless Adam Bogdan in the Bolton goal.

It was certainly the freakiest of all the goals on this list and, again, the keeper ended up on the losing side, with Howard’s Everton eventually losing 2-1.

Asmir Begovic – Stoke v Southampton – 2013

This goal came just 13 seconds into the game at the Bet 365 Stadium, with the Saints’ defence just as much to blame as goalkeeper Artur Boruc for letting the ball in.

Begovic and Howard’s goals led to similar reactions from the scorers in question who both opted not to celebrate.
