Journalist Reveals Liverpool Have “Talked With The Agents” Of World Cup Winner, 3 Other Clubs May Get Involved

Liverpool have been in touch with the representatives of Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard, according to Bild reporter Christian Falk.

Writing in his Caught Offside Substack column, the German journalist says that, while the Reds have held discussions with the player’s entourage, they have not made a concerted effort to sign him, and it’s a similar story with other interested teams:

“Liverpool and Pavard. They talked with the agents but have never been concrete with the club and that’s also the positions of the other clubs. There aren’t many clubs which are of interest to Pavard. There was and is Barca, there’s Liverpool, Chelsea, then if City are on the table, City too.”

It does look as though the Reds are weighing up their options, at the moment. Their enquiries for Pavard suggest they are interested in the player, but they are seemingly not convinced that he is the right target to go after.

Pavard could fill two roles in the Liverpool squad

The impending departure of Calvin Ramsay on loan to Preston, and James Milner’s move to Brighton, has reduced the number of backup options that manager Jurgen Klopp has at right-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold can’t play every game next season so an alternative will need to be found. Pavard is an experienced right-back, having starred for France in that position when they won the World Cup in 2018.

However, the 27-year-old can also play at centre-back. While it has been reported that the Reds would like a left-footed player for the position, Pavard could be considered as a solution.

What other transfer targets are Liverpool considering?

In terms of right-backs, there are not thought to be many other targets being scouted, but there was a shock link to Manchester City’s Kyle Walker earlier this week.

Looking at the centre-back situation, both Wolfsburg’s Micky van der Ven and Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio have been mentioned but moves for either player are not thought to be advanced.
