Two Injury Setbacks, Klopp’s Reason For Subbing Mane And Wijnaldum’s Future: What We Learned From Klopp’s Press Conference

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had a lot to say at his pre-match press conference. The German was speaking ahead of the Reds’ game against West Ham on Monday night.

The Merseyside club know that three points will take them to just four wins away from the Premier League title.

There were, though, a number of other topics covered by Klopp, including injury news, player’s futures and his thoughts on VAR and offside.

Press the “next page” as we look at five things we learned from the Liverpool boss’s press conference.

1) Henderson’s Injury Return Date

The Reds captain had to be substituted in the second half of the 1-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

Klopp has now confirmed that Henderson sustained a hamstring injury, but it wasn’t as bad as first feared, and he will only miss three weeks of action. He is expected to miss Liverpool’s next four games against West Ham, Watford, Chelsea and Bournemouth.

2) Shaqiri Is Still Not In Training

The Swiss winger has not played for the Reds since the 1-0 win over Spurs when he came on for the closing stages of the match as a substitute.

Klopp has revealed Shaqiri is still not fit enough to take part in training, with his calf injury causing him trouble.

3) The Reason Behind Mane’s Substitution Against Atletico

The 27-year-old was substituted at half time against Atletico after picking up a yellow card in the first half.

Although Mane felt he would be fine to continue, Klopp said he had no choice but to take him off as he was certain that the referee would give him a red card.

4) Klopp Is Fine With The Offside Rule

Arsene Wenger has stated that the offside law should be changed to avoid controversial VAR decisions. The former Arsenal boss wants there to be daylight between the attacker and the last defender.

However, Klopp doesn’t feel that the existing rules should be changed, but he wants the decision process to be quickened up.

5) Wijnaldum’s Future Still In Doubt

The Dutchman’s contract at Anfield expires in under eighteen months time, and there have been no reports regarding progress with a new deal. Asked about the midfielder’s future today, Klopp said:

“We have nothing to say. We talk about it when something is decided, not before.”

The Reds boss doesn’t appear to be giving anything away on Wijnaldum.
