“Would Be Madness…” McManaman Explains Why Liverpool Are Unlikely To Pursue Ex Arsenal Star

Ex-Liverpool winger Steve McManaman has played down the chances of the Reds signing Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry this summer.

The former Arsenal winger has been linked with a return to England, with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United also being credited with an interest in the player.

However, while he believes Gnabry could fit into Jurgen Klopp’s front three, McManaman doesn’t see the Reds recruiting a sixth forward who would command regular first-team football:

“I think Liverpool could accommodate Serge Gnabry. He offers something a bit different, he offers pace. He’s shown he’s more of a winger than Salah is, because Mo likes to cut in from the right and get on his left. Gnabry more so as in he’ll drop the shoulder like a typical old-school orthodox winger. So I think they could accommodate him from a playing point of view but again having six forwards would be madness. Sometimes it just causes more problems than you need, and Liverpool’s squad is big enough when everybody is fit and well, and if it stays like that, you probably don’t need any more players.”

McManaman is certainly right to point out that the Reds would be overflowing with options if Gnabry were to make the switch to Anfield, but his availability for such a low price could tempt them into making a bid.

The 26-year-old has less than a year left on his contract at the Allianz Arena and reports suggest that Bayern may allow the German international to leave if a club makes a bid in the region of €40m (£34m).
