Wright Questions Whether Two Liverpool Players Are Good Enough To Play For The Club

BBC pundit Ian Wright has raised concerns about the lack of depth in Liverpool’s squad ahead of next season. The Reds laboured to a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday with Divock Origi taking Roberto Firmino’s place in the starting eleven.

The Belgian did not impress before being substituted on 60 minutes, and Wright feels both the striker and his teammate Takumi Minamino haven’t shown they are good enough to replace the front three:

“What I’ve been looking as is next season, with what they’re [Liverpool] trying to do and who they’re trying to bring in. Will Origi be there? Will Minamino be there?”

“When you look at Origi today and what I’ve seen of Minamino up to this point you have to worry for them a little bit.”

To start with, it is very difficult to replace world-class players like Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane who contribute so much to Liverpool’s attack. Wright’s criticism is, therefore, a bit unfair in that regard.

While his comments on Origi are pretty accurate, it isn’t really fair to tar Minamino with the same brush considering his lack of minutes for the Reds since his arrival from Red Bull Salzburg.

Following his £7.25m move in January, the Japanese international has started just four games, only one of which has come in the Premier League.
