Carragher Claims Arsenal Game May Have Finally Forced Liverpool Into 200M Overhaul

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is backing his former club to spend upwards of £200m on a revamped midfield.

The Sky Sports pundit claims the 3-2 defeat to Arsenal last month was a prime “example” of the Reds’ inability to compete in the middle of the park and he believes an overhaul is likely next summer:

“The issue is that the players don’t have the energy to play a full game at the intensity they’ve played at in previous seasons. Teams are now matching their energy, but this isn’t something that Liverpool has adapted. The Arsenal game was a fine example of this – when they played Liverpool off the pitch in the second half – and that is why I can see Liverpool spending up to £200m on their midfield in the summer.”

Many fans actually want the rebuild to start in January but it is up for debate whether Liverpool will spend any money when the transfer window reopens. With FSG seemingly willing to sell the club, it’s hard to see them making significant funds available for transfers.

They have generally given manager Jurgen Klopp what he wants in the past, and there is no doubt that a new midfielder is needed, but we may have to wait and see how the ownership situation plays out.

At the moment, there are no standout candidates in terms of potential buyers, but that is likely to change in the coming weeks.
