Four Facts About Ferran Torres As Liverpool Are Linked With A Potential Sancho Alternative

Anfield Stadium

With Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho seemingly ruled out as a summer signing, reports began to surface last week that Liverpool have been eyeing a potential alternative.

Valencia’s Ferran Torres is said to be in the Reds’ sights, with the 20-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of next season.

With his club said to be struggling financially, the Spaniard could well be offloaded in the coming months to prevent the player from leaving for nothing in 2021.

So what do we know about Torres? Here are four things you need to know about the Spanish Under 21 international.

He’s a versatile forward

Valencia currently employ Torres as a right-winger, although he has been used as a centre-forward and occasionally as a left-winger during his time with the Spanish side.

That sort of flexibility is important for manager Jurgen Klopp who likes to have a fluid front three who can interchange positions.

Torres is yet to become a prolific goalscorer

Unlike Sancho (who has scored 17 goals this season), the Spanish winger is not prolific in front of goal, having hit the back of the net just six times in all competitions.

At 20 years of age, Torres certainly has time on his side to develop that part of his game, and if he does move to Anfield, he will also be used in a more offensively minded setup.

He crosses the ball regularly

Crossing is important for how Liverpool create opportunities and Torres is no stranger to putting deliveries into the box. This season, he has averaged 3.72 per 90 minutes, with a 32.8% accuracy.

Compared to Sancho, he averages 2 more crosses per game than the Dortmund star, which is a significant difference. Whether that has played any part in Liverpool considering Torres as a potential signing, it remains to be seen.

Torres has a high release clause

As things stand, the Spaniard has a buyout fee of €90m (£79m), which is an extremely high number, but as we have already mentioned, his contract situation may force Valencia into selling for a lot less.

Considering Liverpool like signing players who represent good value (see Takumi Minamino), a move for Torres does seem to be a likely prospect, especially due to his age and the position(s) he plays.
