Liverpool’s game against Manchester City tomorrow is as big as they come for the Reds, and the prospect of going nine points clear after 12 games could tempt manager Jurgen Klopp to play an attacking team.

However, the German will also be mindful that losing could shift the momentum in the title race, and that could play a part in his team selection for the match.

Dejan Lovren has been favoured above Joe Gomez in recent weeks, with Joel Matip out with a knee injury, and you’d expect the Croatian to start alongside Virgil van Dijk in the centre of defence.

Klopp actually started Gomez at right-back in the corresponding fixture last season but there’s no way Trent Alexander-Arnold will be left out considering his recent form. Andy Robertson is also a guaranteed starter on the opposite side.

The main debate will be over who starts in midfield. Despite Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s excellent recent performances, it is suspected that Klopp will revert to his tried and tested trio of Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho for the game.

The forward line picks itself. Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were rested midweek so they should be fresh this weekend, while Mo Salah will be keen to recapture some form against a City side who he has a good record of scoring against.
