Liverpool Backed To Land “Outstanding” Chelsea Star If They Secure CL Qualification

Liverpool will stand a chance of signing Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic if they qualify for the Champions League, according to talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Kovacic will have just one year left on his contract by the end of the season and the Reds, along with Manchester City and Manchester United, have been mentioned as potential suitors for the 28-year-old. When asked whether Jurgen Klopp’s side should try and make an approach for the player, Agbonlahor said:

“I would take him if I were Liverpool. I really admire Kovacic, I think he’s outstanding and he’d fit into most teams across the world. He’s underrated, in my opinion. I think he’s the best midfielder at Chelsea – he can run with the ball, he’s a very good dribbler, he can pick a pass – I really like him.”

“But I don’t think Chelsea will want to sell. They’ll try and tie him down to a new deal so if Liverpool can get into the Champions League, that will give them the edge. It’s going to be tough to get them to sell to a rival.”

As Agbonlahor mentions, Chelsea will probably try to extend Kovacic’s contract but there are a number of factors that may determine what happens to the Croatian international.

The Blues need to raise funds to keep themselves in line with Financial Fair Play regulations and they won’t want Kovacic to run down his current deal, and risk losing him on a free transfer.

Whether they would be prepared to sell him to a Premier League rival, though, is another matter.
