REPORT: Liverpool ‘Interested In Signing’ Spanish ‘Killer’ Who Is In The Final Year Of His Contract

Liverpool are “interested in signing” Real Betis winger Assane Diao, according to AS.

The Madrid-based publication claims that the 17-year-old, who has been described as a “future killer” for Betis and Spain, could leave his current club this summer due to a contract dispute.

Diao has less than a year remaining on his current deal, and there is no indication that a renewal is close to being agreed with the player.

The Reds are keeping a close eye on the Spanish Under 19 international’s situation, with AS saying that Betis are “worried” that they could lose one of their brightest young talents.

Liverpool will have competition for Diao’s signature

Unsurprisingly, considering their aptitude for signing talented young players, RB Leipzig are also reportedly weighing up a move for the Spaniard.

At this stage, it is not known who the favourites are to sign Diao, but you would think that Jurgen Klopp’s side would have the upper hand if it comes down to finances.

What do fans need to know about Diao?

The teenager was born in Senegal but he moved to Spain when he was a kid, and he came through the youth ranks of Cadiz before being snapped up by Betis on a free transfer just over two years ago.

Diao has already played some senior football, having made 20 appearances for Betis’s B team in the Segunda Federacion. He made a good impact, scoring four goals and contributing two assists.

The winger caught the eye of first-team head coach Manuel Pellegrini and he has now had several training sessions with the senior team.

Diao is currently playing for Spain at the European Under 19 Championships. He came on for the final 20 minutes in the 2-1 win over Iceland on Tuesday. His team play their next game against Greece tonight before their final group fixture versus Norway on Monday evening.
