Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is backing his former team to sign three more players this summer.

The Reds have already spent £95m on midfield duo Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, but Carragher believes that manager Jurgen Klopp may want two more midfielders and another defender:

“I think Liverpool will end up getting another two midfield players and I think they’ll need another defender as well. Whether that’s a centre-back or a full-back remains to be seen. There’s a lot of talk [about]whether Liverpool will keep the system they finished the season with. And that’s really interesting, but I think they’ll get another three players in.”

Carragher seems to be pretty much bang on the money with his prediction, considering that the club are already in talks about signing Southampton’s Romeo Lavia. There have also been rumours about a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, while Sporting Lisbon centre-half Goncalo Inacio has been linked too.

There are questions about the transfer budget

Whether Liverpool have the funds to stretch to three more signings, it is up for debate. There were concerns about the budget after the club pulled out of a move for Jude Bellingham but the fact that they were prepared to pay Szoboszlai’s release clause in full does suggest that Reds mean business.

Reports do indicate, however, that they may not be prepared to meet Southampton’s £50m valuation for Lavia, so it is likely that there is limited money still available.

The new system could determine the targets that Liverpool pursue

As Carragher points out, the decision to start using Trent Alexander-Arnold as an inverted fullback at the back end of last season may decide which players the club pursue in the transfer market.

If Alexander-Arnold is asked to play in the same position next season, an understudy would be required so it could be the case that a right-back is prioritised over another midfielder.
