Top Five Global Clubs In World Football – Including Premier League Teams

Recently, FiveThirtyEight have put together a list of the ‘Global Club Rankings’, with a few surprise placements and inclusions in the Premier League[via Mail Online].

The list goes down as far as 641, featuring clubs from across the world – at the bottom of the list is Crawley Town, but we’ll be looking at the top five in this piece.

The list is based mainly on recent success – for example, if a club has achieved a high league placement this season, or won a major trophy, their ranking will be bolstered as a result.

But where do England’s biggest clubs, such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City land on the list? Let’s take a look and find out.

Liverpool

Some Liverpool fans may disagree with this placement – however, they can take solace in the fact that Manchester United will not feature at all!

The Red Devils could only make the 16th spot on the list – below the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

While the current season hasn’t been kind to the Reds, they still remain a driving force in European football – with a few signings here and there, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds could easily return to prominence.

Real Madrid

Arguably the most well-known club in the history of professional football, Real Madrid can only lay claim to the number four spot on FiveThirtyEight’s list.

Despite winning the Copa Del Rey, the 2022/23 season will ultimately go down as a disappointment for Madrid. Not only did they fail to put up much of an effort in the La Liga title race, they were also humiliated in the Champions League semi-finals by Manchester City.

It’s strange to see Los Blancos outside of the top three – but given the season that they have had, it is understandable.

Barcelona

Just breaking the top three are Barcelona – despite a miserable European campaign, Xavi’s men were dominant in La Liga this season, as they collected their 27th league title.

The last few years have been tough for Barca – not only have they been hit with several financial difficulties, they have also lost their club talisman, Lionel Messi, to PSG.

Nevertheless, their failings in Europe aside, the 2022/23 season has been a fine return to form for the Catalonian giants – next season will be a crucial one.

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich, the current German champions, take the number two spot. The Bundesliga has been dominated by Bayern for over a decade now – no other club in a top division has been quite as dominant as FC Hollywood.

This is likely why they have been ranked so highly. They won the Champions League in 2020, defeating PSG in the final, but haven’t been successful in the competition since this triumph.

Additionally, they only won the Bundesliga this season by the skin of their teeth. Despite this, they find themselves placed second in the global rankings.

Manchester City

Topping the list are Manchester City – and it’s not difficult to see why. Pep Guardiola has assembled one of the greatest club sides in football history at the Etihad Stadium.

Having already won the Premier League title and the FA Cup, City are just one game away from picking up their first-ever treble, should they defeat Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

While some may question the size of City’s fanbase, as well as their relatively unimpressive history, their recent success on the pitch cannot be ignored.
