“Would Be A Smart Idea…” Romano Delivers His Verdict On Reports Linking Liverpool With 8 Cap Midfielder

Journalist Fabrizio Romano believes Liverpool would be making a good decision if they did sign Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes this summer.

Reports in Portugal have claimed that the Reds have joined Chelsea and Wolves in pursuing the Portuguese midfielder, who has been capped eight times by his country. Romano did not provide any insight into whether the Reds’ interest is genuine but he feels Nunes could be an excellent addition:

“Personally, I’d sign a new central midfielder. Jurgen Klopp wanted Aurelien Tchouameni when he was at Monaco and held some talks over the deal, but the player preferred Real Madrid. I think another midfielder could help Liverpool, a player like Matheus Nunes, a talented 23-year-old from Sporting Lisbon, would be a smart idea. But Liverpool always think long-term and I’m sure they will invest in a midfielder in 2023.”

From the sound of things, it doesn’t look as if Liverpool are gearing up to make a bid for Nunes. Even though Sporting are thought to be open to selling the 23-year-old for around €50m (£42m), Jurgen Klopp’s side may well be looking elsewhere.

As Romano points out, the Reds are “long-term” thinkers and most journalists feel that the Merseyside club will keep their powder dry until next year when they could well make a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.
