Four Things You May Not Know About Liverpool Wonderkid Neco Williams

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool fans will be excited by the progress that fullback Neco Williams has made this season. After making his debut back in October, he has gone on to make four appearances for the first team in the FA Cup.

With the player having turned 19 yesterday, we thought it would be a good time to share some lesser-known facts about the defender.

Williams hasn’t been in the first team setup very long but his development has had a number of interesting twists and turns.

Press the next page as we look at four things you may not know about the Reds starlet:

He started at Liverpool at a very young age

Williams was born in Wrexham in 2001 and his talent was recognised by Liverpool early on. He joined the Reds at the age of just six and he made his way through all the youth teams at the Kirkby academy.

When he made his debut for the Merseyside club last year, he had already spent ten years with the team, showing how player development can start at a very young age.

Williams didn’t start out life as a right-back

For most of his early youth career at Liverpool, the youngster was mostly used as an attacking midfielder and as a winger.

Much like with Trent Alexander-Arnold, academy coaches opted to convert him into a fullback, and he is now an understudy in the first team to the England international.

He scored in a penalty shootout in a Cup Final

Williams was involved in the FA Youth Cup final victory against Manchester City last season. It was 1-1 after extra time before going to penalties.

The fullback scored his penalty, helping the Reds to a 5-3 shootout victory. Liverpool had not won the youth competition for 12 years, demonstrating the strength of the young players coming through the academy.

Williams’ strong impact on his senior debut

The 19-year-old’s debut will be remembered for the assist he gave for Divock Origi’s last-minute equaliser in the 5-5 draw against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

However, Williams also had the most blocks, tackles and second-most touches of any Liverpool player on the night. He put in a performance well beyond his years.
