Liverpool’s Five Best Bargain Signings Of The Premier League Era

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool have not always been the shrewdest in the transfer market during the Premier League era. One of the key reasons why they haven’t won a league title for the last thirty years has been due to their poor transfer dealings.

However, the Reds have still picked up some bargains who have gone on to make a name for themselves at the Merseyside club

It is not a coincidence that most of the players we have selected on this list were signed in the last decade, considering the improvement in scouting and recruitment.

Press the next page as we go through the five best bargains of the Premier League era.

5) Philippe Coutinho (£8.5m)

The Brazilian had been struggling to make an impression at Inter Milan before the Reds snapped him up for a modest fee in the 2013 January transfer window.

Needless to say, Coutinho proved his doubters wrong, scoring 54 goals and providing 45 assists in 201 appearances before being sold for a staggering £142m to Barcelona.

4) Joe Gomez (£3.5m)

Not much was known about the young English defender when Liverpool brought him in from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and the scouts need to be given huge credit for identifying such a promising talent.

Gomez has already played 100 games for the Reds despite only being 23 years of age. He has the potential to go on to be a truly world-class centre-back if he continues on his current trajectory.

3) Andy Robertson (£8m)

The Scottish left-back had had an impressive season with Hull City before he was snapped up by the Merseyside club but many felt like it was still a bit of a punt when he joined in 2017.

However, after taking six months to bed in, Robertson began to show he was an extremely capable defender, with his high work rate and his ability to contribute assists. He is now one of the best left-backs in the world.

2) Sami Hyypia (£2.5m)

Plucked from obscurity after playing for Eredivisie side Willem II, the Finnish international went on to play 464 appearances for Liverpool during a ten-year stay at Anfield.

Hyppia was instrumental in the treble-winning side of 2001 and was equally integral when the Reds lifted their fifth European Cup in 2005.

1) James Milner (Free)

There haven’t been many better Bosman transfers since the ruling was introduced in the mid-nineties. The midfielder has been a leader, both on and off the pitch, whilst being a reliable penalty taker to boot.

Brendan Rodgers made some questionable buys during the last couple of years of his time at Anfield, but it was an excellent decision to bring in Milner back in 2015.
