Liverpool’s Top Four Managers Of The Premier League Era

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool may have struggled during the Premier League era, for the most part, but it hasn’t stopped them winning numerous cups and European trophies under different managers.

Certainly, not every appointment has worked out (ahem Roy Hodgson), but there have been enough memorable moments over the years to justify ranking them in terms of success.

There are some obvious candidates for those who should be included in this list but you may dispute the order with which we have placed them.

Press the next page as we rank the top four Liverpool managers since the Premier League began.

4) Brendan Rodgers

We could have easily picked Roy Evans for this spot, with the former Liverpool manager having won a League Cup in 1995 and gone close to the title in 1998.

However, Rodgers is on this list simply because of the 2013/14 campaign. Some of the football that the Reds played during that season was simply astonishing, and while he did not win the Premier League, the unexpected title challenge will go down in club folklore.

3) Gerard Houllier

The Frenchman’s time in charge will be remembered for the treble-winning season of 2001. The FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup triumph would never be repeated.

Houllier also came close to winning the title in 2002, but things began to fell apart in his subsequent two seasons in charge with some very questionable signings.

2) Rafa Benitez

The ‘Miracle in Istanbul’ and the 2008/09 title challenge were the two high points of the Spaniard’s five-year reign at Anfield. While the 2005 Champions League victory was unexpected, it demonstrated Benitez’s tactical mastery.

By 2008, he had built a team capable of winning trophies, with the likes of Torres, Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard, but the lack of depth in the squad meant the league title fell through the club’s grasp once again.

1) Jurgen Klopp

The German’s position at the top of the list cannot be argued against. A Champions League title, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA World Club Championship trophy have all been lifted in the space of six months.

Hopefully, when the current health crisis eases, Klopp will also be able to add the Premier League title to his growing list of achievements. He is now an undisputed Liverpool icon.
