The Four Affordable Alternatives That Liverpool Could Buy After Losing Out On Werner

Anfield Stadium

As expected, Chelsea have formally announced that RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner will be signing for the London club, subject to a medical.

Liverpool had been pursuing the German international for more than a year but the Reds were unable to afford the forward’s €52m (£47m) release clause, allowing their Premier League rivals the opportunity to steal in and secure the deal.

With the global health crisis having impacted the Merseyside club’s ability to sign players in the uppermost price bracket, fans may have to accept the fact that the recruitment team will be looking at signings who could cost a lot less.

So who would make an affordable alternative to Werner? We take a look at four possible options.

Donyell Malen

His asking price has been reported as being between £35m and £50m but the impact of the global health crisis may lead to his club PSV asking for a lot less in order to balance the books.

Malen also underwent minor knee surgery in January which may also stop Liverpool from making a bid, but the former Arsenal striker scored 17 goals in 25 games last season. He is also capable of playing right across the front three.

Marcus Thuram

The Frenchman’s valuation is closer to £40m but, again, that may come down with Borussia Monchengladbach needing cash to keep their finances in check.

Thuram was only signed from Guingamp for €12m (£11m) last summer but he has had an excellent first season in Germany, scoring 14 goals in 39 games.

Domenico Berardi

It is surprising that no club has decided to sign the Italian international up until now. The 25-year-old has scored 64 goals in 197 Serie A appearances for Sassuolo whilst playing as a right-winger and as a central striker.

Berardi has also confessed in the past that he would be keen on a move to Liverpool and he wouldn’t be that expensive either with some reports claiming he would fetch between £20m and £30m.

Ferran Torres

Some reports have ruled Liverpool out of the race to sign the Valencia winger, but with the Spaniard having just one year left on his contract at the Mestalla, the Reds must surely be tempted to snap him up for a bargain price.

Torres does generally play from the right-hand side but the 20-year-old has been utilised both as a left-winger and a centre-forward this season. Due to his young age, he wouldn’t expect to be a regular starter straight away either.
