“Then Things Should Be Clear…” Club Chief Issues Deadline For Liverpool To Snap Up 35M Rated Mane Replacement

PSV Eindhoven technical director John de Jong says they want captain Cody Gakpo’s future to be resolved before the start of August.

The Netherlands international has been linked with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in recent weeks, with it being claimed that he could be sold for around £35m. However, de Jong believes there is still a chance that the player remains with the Eredivise club for another year if he doesn’t secure a move within the next couple of months:

“We would like Cody to play here next season. I certainly think he can continue to grow here. If he stays for another year, it will only be better for the club. We will bet on that. We have a lot of interesting players at PSV, which Europe[‘s] top clubs are looking at. It will not last until September 1 with Cody, I don’t think he wants that either. At the beginning of August, then things should be clear.”

Liverpool’s interest in Gakpo came as a surprise when it was first mentioned back in March but, with Sadio Mane now seemingly poised to leave Anfield, the links have begun to make more sense.

The Dutchman generally plays off the left-wing, cutting on onto his strong right foot, so he would be a like-for-like replacement. It had been believed that Luis Diaz was signed in January as Mane’s successor but it appears that Gakpo could also be brought in to compete with the Colombian.
