The Five Worst Liverpool Transfers Of The Premier League Era

Anfield Stadium

Considering the number of poor purchases Liverpool have made in the Premier League era, it was a challenge to cut the number down to just five.

So what we have done is select one each from five managers: Graeme Souness, Roy Evans, Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez and Roy Hodgson.

With Jurgen Klopp having rarely put a foot wrong in the transfer market, it was easy not to include his purchases while with Brendan Rodgers, it was one fatal summer after the sale of Luis Suarez that really did all the damage. Perhaps a subject for another article. The same could be said for King Kenny’s second spell in charge.

So press the “next page” as we glance through five of the worst transfers Liverpool have made in the past thirty years:

Torben Piechnik

The Dane has gone down as one of the worst pieces of transfer business in the Merseyside club’s history. Graeme Souness made some terrible signings during his time in charge, but the defender is widely regarded as the worst of the lot.

Piechnik actually played in the final and won Euro 92 with Denmark, but he struggled to adapt to life in England, and he played 17 league games before being sold by Souness’s successor Roy Evans.

Sean Dundee

The German striker arrived in Evans’s final season in charge at Liverpool, during the ill-fated co-manager experiment with Gerard Houllier.

Dundee never started a league game for the Reds, making three substitute appearances before being shipped back to Germany after one season at a loss of £1m.

El Hadji Diouf

The Senegalese international was one of the stars of the 2002 World Cup, and it led Gerard Houllier to shell out £10m on him. It proved to be a massive mistake.

Diouf clashed with senior members of the Liverpool dressing room, and only scored six goals during his first season at Anfield. Things got worse in his second campaign, going the entire season without scoring. He was then loaned out and eventually sold to Bolton in 2005.

Charles Itandje

The Frenchman arrived from Lens in August 2007 as cover for Pepe Reina and Scott Carson but it wasn’t his footballing ability that makes him Rafa Benitez’s worst signing.

His reputation was sullied by the incident at the Hillsborough memorial service in April 2009. Complaints were made about his behaviour, and he never played for the club again.

Paul Konchesky

This was a toss-up between the left-back and Christian Poulsen. We went for the Englishman as everyone knew he wasn’t up to the task before he signed from Fulham.

Konchesky played just 18 games for the Reds before being shipped out on loan to Nottingham Firest just five months after he signed. He was eventually sold to Leicester a year after his arrival at Anfield.
